Here's What They Said About......

The King and I 2006

"I hadn't expected my heart strings to be pulled so tightly"

Because The King and I is a favourite of mine, I had expected to leave Urmston Musical Theatre's production at Urmston Sports Centre, with taut heart strings. But I hadn't expected them to be pulled quite so tightly. For this company squeezed every ounce of feeling out of this classic. Yet it could have been a disaster.

For Simon Fletcher took on the role of the King only two weeks ago after David Gonet injured his leg during rehearsal. Simon had played the part in March for another society and he made an amazing comeback. He gave a bold performance as a sovereign determined to prove he was not a barbarian and longing to be immovable and strong whilst needing guidance himself. Deborah Holmes' Anna supported him and his wives, even though she was only employed to teach English to his many children. Although nothing developed, the mutual attraction was there, particularly when they danced.

The elicit lovers, Lun Tha and Tuptim (George Brockbanks and Kayleigh Smith) sang We Kiss in the Shadows movingly. Ann Robinson was a good pincipal wife and 11 year olds Maxwell Wynne-Davies ad Samuel Reuben showed talent as Anna's and the King's sons.

Urmston Musical Theatre lived up to their reputation for exotic choreography, beautiful costumes and superb singing. They made good use of their jumior section, too. They couldn't go wrong with numbers such as Hello Young Lovers and Getting to Know You
